Zhiqiang Niu started independent research career as Hundred Young Academic Leaders of Nankai University since 2014. Niu has extensive research experience in materials chemistry, electrochemistry and energy storage. His research interests focus on aqueous batteries. He has published more than 150 papers. All the papers have been cited more than 17000 times. He has been awarded the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars (2024), the National Science Fund for Excellent Young Scholars (2018), the First Prize of Tianjin Natural Science Award (R1) (2021), Chinese Chemical Society-Evonik Chemical Innovation Award- Outstanding Young Scientist (2021), Clarivate Highly-Cited Researcher 2020-2024.

Aqueous zinc battery shows great promising in the field of large-scale energy storage due to its high safety and low cost. However, there are still some challenges in the design of aqueous zinc battery. In their cathodes, the active materials often suffer from sluggish kinetics and structural destruction during the charge/discharge process, hindering the rate capability and cycling lifetime.To overcome these issues, some creative strategies were developed to modify the structure of active materials, such as ion doping, nano-carbon composite, crystal structure regulation and molecular design. In addition, in zinc anodes, zinc dendrite an
